Campervan sites in Scotland and legal motorhome stopovers

Compare the Scotland campsites currently published in our directory, carry your dates and vehicle into an availability enquiry, and understand when an official stopover is the better option.

The short answer

A van is not covered by Scotland’s wild-camping right

The Scottish Outdoor Access Code covers responsible lightweight tent camping where access rights apply, but access rights do not include motor vehicles. For a campervan or motorhome, use a campsite, an authorised stopover, a participating Forestry and Land Scotland car park or landowner permission. Check signs and local restrictions when you arrive.

Official alternative

Forestry and Land Scotland Stay the Night

Selected car parks allow one overnight stay for eligible self-contained campervans and motorhomes. Spaces are first come, first served, cannot currently be reserved and have site-specific vehicle rules.

Carry your trip details into an enquiry

Add the useful details once, then choose a published campsite. Nothing is saved or sent until you complete the separate availability form.

Dates are planning details, not a live availability search. Confirm vehicle size, access, price and space with the operator.

Campsite, authorised stop or permission?

Bookable campsite

Best when you need a reservable pitch, hookups, waste disposal, showers or several nights. Confirm the live terms and total price with the operator.

Authorised one-night stop

Useful for a touring night when the vehicle meets the scheme rules. Capacity can be limited and a backup is essential when spaces cannot be reserved.

Private land permission

Only use land where the owner or lawful occupier has clearly permitted the vehicle and stay. Agree the location, duration, waste arrangements and any fee.

Before driving to the stop

  • ✓ Confirm the exact vehicle type, length and any awning.
  • ✓ Check arrival time, road access, pitch surface and seasonal closure.
  • ✓ Confirm freshwater, grey-water and toilet-waste arrangements.
  • ✓ Save a legal backup before entering a weak-signal area.
  • ✓ Never assume a daytime car park permits an overnight stay.

Scotland campervan questions

Can a campervan or motorhome wild camp anywhere in Scotland?

No. Scotland’s responsible-access rights do not include access with motor vehicles. Use a campsite, an authorised overnight stop, a participating Stay the Night car park or private land where the owner has clearly permitted the stay.

Can I reserve a Forestry and Land Scotland Stay the Night space?

No. Forestry and Land Scotland says its spaces are first come, first served and cannot currently be reserved online. Check the live destination list, vehicle rules and fee before travelling, and keep a legal backup.

Does this page show live campsite availability?

No. The directory shows published campsite information and carries your trip details into an enquiry. Availability, price, access and vehicle suitability must be confirmed by the operator.

What if my motorhome is more than seven metres long?

Check every campsite or authorised stop individually. Forestry and Land Scotland says only some participating car parks suit vehicles over seven metres, and private campsites can have their own access or pitch limits.
