Van Life Campsites in Highlands

Be the first to list a site here

The Scottish Highlands are one of the UK's great van touring destinations. Scotland's outdoor access rights support responsible lightweight tent camping, but they do not create a right to park or sleep overnight in a campervan or motorhome. Vehicle users should use campsites, authorised stopovers, or land where permission has been given.

The North Coast 500 (NC500) route draws van lifers from across Europe: 516 miles of spectacular single-track road taking in Torridon, Assynt, Cape Wrath, and the Flow Country. The route is busy in summer and has an expanding network of campsites, farm stops, and authorised aires.

Beyond the NC500, the Highlands offer limitless possibilities: Glencoe, the Great Glen, Glen Affric, Knoydart, and the Cairngorms are all exceptional touring destinations. Scotland's midges are a real concern between June and August — invest in a midge net and avoid still, damp evenings near water.

Van Life Tips for Highlands

Single-track roads require patience — pull into passing places to allow faster vehicles and oncoming traffic through. Never park blocking passing places. Midges are worst June-August in still weather near water; midge nets are essential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is wild camping legal in the Scottish Highlands?

Responsible lightweight tent camping is covered by Scottish outdoor access rights in many places, subject to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and local restrictions. Those rights do not apply to parking or sleeping in a campervan or motorhome; use an authorised stop or obtain permission.

What is the best time of year for van life in the Highlands?

May and early June offer the best combination of good weather, long daylight hours, and relatively few midges. September is also excellent. July and August bring crowds to the NC500 and midges everywhere.

Can I do the NC500 in a large motorhome?

The NC500 has many single-track sections that can be challenging for large motorhomes. Vans up to about 7m are generally fine with care. Larger vehicles should research specific road sections in advance and consider missing out the most remote stretches.
